Little Miss Sicky Poo

The basics:
My name is Leane Owen.  I am 37 years old and I am married to a super handsome guy named Daniel.  We have two beautiful boys and we live in Phoenix, AZ.  We have 3 dogs; huge, medium and small.  We also have 3 cats (all rescues), a coup full of hens and one nasty rooster named Bob that I’m pretty sure wants to kill me.

A little background:
I have what most people would probably classify as an obsession with health, food and fitness.  And if I have an audience and a soapbox, I can talk for days about my experiences, research and opinions.  I’ve struggled my entire life with a myriad of health problems ranging from minor annoyances to hospitalizations.  All of which began with my first medical diagnosis of psoriasis at the age of 10.  Little did I know then that my mother’s paranoid skepticism of medical doctors and my multiplying health problems over the years would spur a lifelong search and series of experimentation to find ultimate health through diet, fitness and natural healthcare.  This journey has confirmed to me that on some level my Mom’s crazy rantings had some merit and that there are a lot of doctors out there that don’t know what they are talking about.

Why am I Little Miss Sicky Poo?
Over the years, I’ve suffered with a moderate to sometimes severe case of psoriasis, debilitating arthritis, auto-immune disease, unexplained colitis, constant stomach issues, anxiety, thyroid issues, extreme fatigue, allergies, asthma, chronic bronchitis, lowered immune function and a general feeling of always being unwell.  It’s a miracle that my husband didn’t run screaming from me when we met.

Going rogue:
For years I went to countless doctors and specialists, took many drugs and experienced some pretty startling side effects from those drugs.  What I discovered is that the pills weren’t solving anything, in fact they seemed to be making things worse.   I grew weary of the prescriptions, but that seemed to be the only “solution” that the doctors were willing to give me.  I wasn’t interested in listening to their big pharma sales pitches anymore.  So…I went rogue.

I wanted to get away from the synthetic drugs and the side effects so I started experimenting with homeopathic and natural remedies.  Some worked a little and some were just snake oil.  Still, I felt better about using them then the pills and ointments that the doctors were so eager to prescribe.  Eventually I came to the conclusion, however, that similarly to the drugs, I was merely masking the symptoms instead of getting to the root cause of my issues.  I continued to read and research and things started to connect.  Diet!  That was it!  Something I was eating was making me sick.  But what?

How I became primal:
I spent the next few years trying various types of diets to seek an improvement in my health.  I became a vegetarian, a vegan…ugh never again, gluten free, dairy free, low-carb, sugar free, you name it, I tried it.  A few of them yielded some positive results but something was still off.  Then I discovered the “Primal” diet.  This is where it all changed.  It seemed like everything that I had learned finally clicked into place and it all made sense.  Of course, it was so clear now!  How did I not see this before?

Within a month of going primal, my psoriasis cleared, my arthritis pain started to subside, my hair stopped falling out, all of my stomach problems disappeared, I had more energy, felt less anxious and as a bonus, I lost about 10 lbs.  Every day that I eat primal, my health improves and my body gets better and better.

So why did I start this blog?
The truth is that people are being given bad advice about diet and drugs and how these things affect our health.  With the flood of information out there, it can be confusing and difficult to know what to do to gain control of our health. The Standard American Diet is in desperate need of revision and our ideas about food need to change.  We also need to start looking at where our food comes from. I created this blog to inspire people to take their health into their own hands.  I believe that our idea of what is “healthy” needs to change in this country and I do, in fact, sense awareness that something is amiss.  My posts are about my personal health experiences, the primal lifestyle, studies and research, opinion pieces and even recipes and fitness information.  I hope that you find them useful.  Here’s to your health 😉

Good Stuff Leane... so glad to see you are on the right track. You are absolutely correct about everything stemming from a healthy diet. I cover health and wellness topics quite a bit on the show. I started a new segment recently called "Doctor Robert". No, I'm not actually a doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently...
