Grilled Ham Steaks & Sauce

My fabulous butcher in South Phoenix, (shameless plug), The Meat Shop had a sale on ham steaks last week so I took advantage and bought up a whole bunch of them.  I usually make little ham and pineapple skewers out of them, which my kids love, but this time I was looking for something a little different.  I had a few left over sprigs of rosemary and a mess of garlic so I decided to seek out a new recipe that could incorporate those ingredients.

The end result of my experiment was quite yummy.  Unfortunately my oldest son insisted that I cut it up and put it on a stick with pineapple, but hey, that’s par for the course.  Here’s what I did:


  • 2 -3 Ham Steaks
  • 2 Tbs. Maple Syrup
  • 1 Tbs. Dijon Mustard
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 Tbs. butter
  • 5-6 sprigs of rosemary
  • 2-3 sprigs of thyme


  • Melt butter in a small sauce pan
  • Add garlic and cook until softened
  • Add maple syrup and remaining ingredients and heat until liquid reduces and thickens
  • Allow the the sauce to slowly simmer for about 15 minutes to let the flavors set
  • Salt and pepper the sauce to taste
  • Brush each side of the ham steaks or if you have the time, allow the ham to marinate them for about an hour
  • Be sure to reserve some of the sauce to pour over the finished ham steaks
  • Using a stove top grill or an outdoor grill, grill the ham steaks on both sides for about 5 minutes
